Appeal for Cuban Librarians

In solidarity with protests voiced by IFLA and influential personalities of public life, the Polish Librarians Association is expressing deep concern for the events of sentencing several Cuban librarians to serve exceptionally lengthy prison terms for the charge of organizing independent libraries. The actions of the Cuban authorities relate to the worst traditions of repressing the freedom of thought, expression and information exchange, exercised by all regimes throughout the history. These repressions are a violation of Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights of December 10, 1948, which states:

"Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless frontiers."

The measures of the Cuban government are aimed not only against the persecuted librarians, but also against users, whose access to alternative media and publications thus becomes constrained. Shutting independent libraries impoverishes the cultural life of the Cuban Nation, which it is guaranteed by Paragraph 1 of Article 27 of the above Declaration:

"Everyone has the right freely to participate in the cultural life of the community, to enjoy the arts and to share in scientific advancement and its benefits."

The Polish Librarians Association is appealing for uniting the efforts of all individuals and organizations, which treasure freedom of expression and intellectual independence.

Therefore:
  • We are demanding the release of our fellow Cuban librarians!
  • We are reminding you that the imprisonment of intellectuals is a disgrace to the original ideas of the Cuban revolution!

Apel w obronie kubańskich bibliotekarzy

Stowarzyszenie Bibliotekarzy Polskich - solidaryzując się z listami protestacyjnymi ze strony IFLA i wpływowych osobistości życia publicznego - wyraża głębokie zaniepokojenie faktem skazania na wyjątkowo długie kary pozbawienia wolności kilkunastu kubańskich bibliotekarzy obwinionych o organizowanie niezależnych placówek bibliotecznych.

Posunięcie władz kubańskich nawiązuje do najgorszych tradycji ograniczania swobody myśli, wypowiedzi i przepływu informacji, stosowanych przez wszelkie reżimy na przestrzeni wieków. Represje te łamią Art. 19 Powszechnej Deklaracji Praw Człowieka z 10 grudnia 1948 r., który głosi:

Każdy człowiek ma prawo wolności opinii i wyrażania jej; prawo to obejmuje swobodę posiadania niezależnej opinii, poszukiwania, otrzymywania i rozprowadzania informacji i poglądów wszelkimi środkami, bez względu na granice.

Poczynania władz kubańskich godzą nie tylko w prześladowanych bibliotekarzy, ale również w czytelników, którym tym sposobem ogranicza się wolność korzystania z alternatywnych mediów i publikacji. Zamykanie niezależnych bibliotek zubaża życie kulturalne Narodu Kubańskiego, zagwarantowane w Art. 27 punkt 1 powyższej Deklaracji, obwieszczającym, że:

Każdy człowiek ma prawo do swobodnego uczestniczenia w życiu kulturalnym społeczeństwa, do korzystania ze sztuki, do uczestniczenia w postępie nauki i korzystania z jego dobrodziejstw.

Stowarzyszenie Bibliotekarzy Polskich apeluje o zjednoczenie wysiłków wszystkich ludzi i organizacji, którym drogie są wolność słowa i wolność intelektualna.

Dlatego:
  • żądamy ułaskawienia kubańskich kolegów bibliotekarzy!
  • przypominamy, że więzienie intelektualistów to hańba dla pierwotnych idei kubańskiej rewolucji!

Llamamiento en defensa de los bibliotecarios cubanos

La Asociación de los Bibliotecarios Polacos - solidarizándose con las cartas de protesta de parte de IFLA y personas influyentes de la vida pública - quiere expresar su profunda preocupación por el hecho de condenar a unas penas de privación de libertad excepcionalmente largas de unos cuantos (entre diez y veinte) bibliotecarios cubanos acusados de organizar centros bibliotecarios.

La maniobra de las autoridades cubanas basa en las peores tradiciones de limitar la libertad de ideas, declaraciones (manifestaciones) y flujo de informaciones, empleadas por todos regímenes a través de los siglos. Estas represiones infringen el Art. 19 de la Declaración General de Derechos Humanos del 10 de Diciembre 1948, el cual proclama:

Todo individuo tiene derecho a la libertad de opinión y de expresión; este derecho incluye el de no ser molestado a causa de sus opiniones, el de investigar y recibir informaciones y opiniones, y el de difundirlas, sin limitación de fronteras, por cualquier medio de expresión.

La liquidación de bibliotecas independientes empobrece la vida cultural de la Nación Cubana, garantizada en el Art. 27, punto 1 de la Declaración citada arriba, el cual proclama:

Toda persona tiene derecho a tomar parte libremente en la vida cultural de la comunidad, a gozar de las artes y a participar en el progreso científico y en los beneficios que de él resulten.

La Asociación de los Bibliotecarios Polacos apela por la unificación de los esfuerzos de toda la gente y de las organizaciones a quienes importa la libertad de opiniones, así como la libertad intelectual.

Por eso:
  • solicitamos el indulto para nuestros colegas bibliotecarios cubanos!
  • evocamos que el hecho de encarcelar a los intelectualistas causa infamia para las ideas originales de la revolución cubana!
