As a group the Division encourages special librarianship as a whole and works towards improving relationships between special libraries, information providers, and patrons.

Divisional goals are to encourage cooperation between special libraries within given countries and between countries, especially with special libraries in the developing world and eastern Europe; promote education and training of special librarians; encourage and continue publication of guides, directories, papers in both paper and electronic forms; cooperate with IFLA Core Programmes and other IFLA units as applied to special libraries and their interests.
